The Maine State Board of Funeral Services was established to protect the public by regulating funeral services practices in Maine. The primary purpose of the Board is to protect the public from unsafe practices and practices that have a tendency to decrease competition or fix the prices of services.
As its name implies, membership is comprised of government boards and commissions that regulate the funeral industry in their respective jurisdictions. All of the national organizations provide voluntary membership in the Best Practice Standard Scheme, which includes routine site inspections and compliance with a specified code of conduct. These organizations assist funeral directors in showing they are committed to ongoing personal development and have no problem with regulation if it becomes a statutory requirement.
